Christian Education Committee Report

In 2011 the Christian Education Committee was responsible for seeking and supplying Sunday School teachers, choosing and ordering Christian Education materials, organizing Rally Day, Vacation Bible School, Gathering of the Greens, the Advent Event, the Christmas Pageant, Epiphany Stars, ordering and presenting personalized Bibles to 3rd graders, serving one of the Lenten Dinners and choosing and ordering devotional materials for Advent and Lent.

The theme for VBS, which was held in the evenings the week of June 12th, was “Shake It Up Café” with 37 kids involved and a host of volunteers doing stories, games, crafts and snacks.

Lynda Karger  directed the Christmas Pageant, with help from the KWT leaders.  The theme was “Touched By an Angel”.  Practices were held during KWT on Wednesdays during November and December.  The program was presented on December 11.

Kids Worshipping Together - KWT+

In 2011 it was decided that we would open KWT (which had previously only been 3rd, 4th and 5th graders) to a wider age group due to a small number of children in those grades. KWT helps during the Lenten season by setting the tables for our Wednesday night Lenten meals.  When KWT started up again in October we expanded the group even further to younger children also.  We have been working on "Heroes of the Bible", singing with Lynda Karger, Sharon Bond and Kerri Dyne for Youth Choir and with the addtion of Pastor Rebecca we have become a dynamic group of expressive children in our congregation(and with friends joining in also).  Thank you to members of the congregation who have donated meals to help Leaders Glenda Buonanducci, Cris Mallory and Carrie Zook make this group possible.  Our mission this year was to restart the Food Pantry collections which will continue through 2012.

Committee members, along with other church members, spent a great deal of time during the spring and summer months cleaning and painting the upstairs church school rooms.

Respectfully Submitted,

Worship Committee Report

Committee members: Lynda Karger, Sharon Bond, Betsey Davis, Linda Harris, Leanna Schleicher, Rev. Rebecca Taylor, and Jody Larson.

2011 has been an exciting year for the Presbyterian Church of Kane. It began with a search already underway for a temporary supply pastor that resulted in Rev. Rebecca Taylor answering a call to ministry in Kane. On September 11, 2011 she conducted her first worship service in our church. Since that time we are pleased to report that not only worship attendance is up, but that the worship experience in this church is vibrant and Spirit filled. We welcome Rebecca to our church and community in the hope that God will be honored and glorified, and by the Spirit’s guidance, we might be led into the future together.

We are reminded that in our Book of Order it states that; “In Jesus Christ, the Church is a royal priesthood in which worship is the work of everyone. The people of God are called to participate in the common ministry of worship.”

In our church and in all other Presbyterian churches, the session is to provide for the worship and shall encourage the people to participate fully and regularly in it. Under the direction and guidance our pastor, the worship committee of the Presbyterian Church of Kane is charged with the responsibility of providing for and overseeing the proper and orderly worship that takes place in this church.

Many exciting possibilities are before us as we grow together as a congregation in worship. The committee has been meeting twice a month and sometimes in between to insure that the development of worship services and all related special services are conducted appropriately and with meaning.

Our music ministry has a proven history of continuity un-paralleled by many churches in our area. Music is a vital part of the worship experience and we are blessed to have gifts and talents that abound in this regard. The committee wishes to thank Lynda Karger, Betsey Davis and Sharon Bond for their combined efforts in leading this ministry. Also, the committee recognizes all those who faithfully participate as singers, bell ringers, and others who make a joyful noise to the glory of God in this church.

Again this year, the committee is grateful for all who lector and serve as elders and deacons in all the obvious and visible responsibilities, as well as those who work behind the scenes to enrich the worship ministry in this church.

Finally, to the congregation who faithfully attend worship we thank you. You have done your part, by listening, singing and praying. Together we are, “the church.”

Jody Larson

Church Music Report

The music ministry of the church continues to provide quality inspirational music to the weekly Sunday Service and special services throughout the church year.

The Chancel Choir averaged 15 dedicated voices this past year.  The dedication of this group is evident in their faithful attendance every Wednesday and Sunday, at times sacrificing personal time and travel to be available for Sunday morning services.  I am forever grateful for each and everyone of them.  Our numbers are growing this year and we now 21 when choir is full WOW!!!!!

The Youth Choir is back up and running and presented a very cute Christmas play this year. The addition of Rev. Rebecca has added a new dimension as we have learned songs with the guitar, and with Sharon Bond on the piano. Ask the children about when Sharon plays and they dance around the room…they LOVE it!!!!! A special thanks to Kerri Dyne, Carrie Zook, Cris Mallery and Glenda Buonanducci for their help and assistance.

Sharon Bond accompanies the Chancel Choir; I greatly appreciate her talent and the expertise that she brings to the music program. She has the knack for making us all look good.

I wish to thank all the people I have had the privilege to work with this past year, and look forward to a new year full of hope and with bright, new and innovated ideas to enhance worship.

In Song,    Lynda

The Adult Handbell Choir

The Adult Handbell Choir continued to add their gifts to worship during Lent, Easter, Advent, Christmas and Sunday Worship throughout 2011, sometimes combining their skills with those of the Chancel Choir. Starting back up in September and generally ending in May, the Handbell Choir meets Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30.  Our choir is blessed with the skills of players that have been with us for 15 plus years, along with the determination, willingness and skills of beginning players.

There’s always room for others to add their talents to this music ministry and fellowship, even those who wish only to substitute, or play for a few months.  The choir generally plays once a month for Sunday Worship services, and during additional services.  Anyone interested is welcome to come.

With Ringing, Betsey

Annual Report of the Deacons ~ 2011

The Deacons had yet another busy year serving the congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Kane and the community as well.

When church members experienced a time of need the Deacons prepared and delivered meals and sent cards and/or calls of support.  We also made a deliberate effort to mail cards of support or sympathy to non-congregational members of the community in order to remind them that we as a church are keeping them in our prayers. In the absence of a minister for most of the year, the Deacons were unable to serve communion to homebound members, however scheduling to resume doing so with Rev. Rebecca is already in the works for the year ahead.  Our ministries of cards, calls, meals, and fellowship events have all continued this year.  We have done all of these ministries in your name as we represent the entire church family.

In June we held the coffee hour in honor of our only graduating high school senior, Josh Ishman.  Also in June, we prepared and hosted the annual Pie & Ice Cream Social during Kane’s Alumni Weekend.  We had a wonderful turnout of people, delicious pies, and entertainment was provided by the Guitar Choir.  All of these things combined to make a hugely successful evening of fellowship.  Proceeds from this event were used to purchase items needed for the women’s shelter in Bradford, with the remaining balance deposited to be used in the future as needs arise.

We started the fall season with the Thankful Feast during which our church family came together to enjoy “apple-y” and “pumpkin-y” treats and one another’s company. Despite our efforts to obtain addresses of our college students in order to maintain correspondence with them, we did not receive ANY addresses.  If you have the name and address of someone in college, please provide the information to the Deacons so that we can periodically send them letters to remind them that their church family continues to think of and care for them.

Once again this Christmas season, we joined with McKean County Children and Youth Services to provide clothing and Christmas gifts for children under the care of the agency.  The generosity of our congregation was overwhelming as gifts for these children poured in.  Also in December we went caroling at Central Towers and the Lutheran Home. Homemade cookies were taken to be shared with residents of the Lutheran Home and it was an evening filled with songs and smiles.

Throughout the year we have visited, prayed for, and sent cards of encouragement, congratulations, or sympathy to many of you.  We count on you to keep us informed about those who may need a helping hand, some extra support, a meal during hard times, or a bit of encouragement.  We are always available for support in any time and need and are one body working to the glory of God.

Tami Ross, Moderator

AN ENDURING WORD FROM THE TEMPORARY PASTOR

The Presbyterian Church of Kane X Annual Report to the Congregation for 2011

Rev. Rebecca J. Taylor, Temporary Supply Pastor

Methodist pastor and professor W. Paul Jones chronicled his experiences while living at a Trappist monastery for several months in a book titled The Province Beyond the River.  In the second month of his time working and praying alongside his new-found brothers, Jones describes a disastrous morning while helping at the eggery.  While using a new piece of equipment designed to harvest more eggs more efficiently, Jones reports gaining confidence with the first three successful uses of the new lifter.  With the fourth attempt, however, something went awry and thirty eggs suddenly smashed against the machinery, becoming “instant omelets.”  Jones then reflects, “For the rest of the morning my ability was hampered – each lift was with anxiety, lacking both trust and confidence.  Every insignificant noise sounded like the harbinger of the great egg demise.  As I thought of this paralysis of effective action, I thought of how each of us needs the healing of memories.”

We need the healing of memories… so true.  And Jones rightly identifies the crippling effect of still-wounded memories: effective action isn’t possible; fear paralyzes us.  He continues, “It does not take many failures, rejections, losses, putdowns, until the memory is wounded.  A black and blue memory becomes the filter for narrow and tentative imaginations on the present, blinding us to the future.”

We need the healing of memories… and not just to feel better about ourselves, not simply to get a better night’s sleep, but to live more fully in this moment and to embrace a more robust hope for the future, vibrant with visions of expansive plans and bold initiatives.

Organizations are organisms too… congregations need the healing of memories too.  Jones sees it as the Spirit’s job to cure the hurt; I believe he’s onto something!

And I believe The Presbyterian Church of Kane is onto something as a community of faith!

With the strength and commitment of officers and staff, ministry moved forward in 2011 without pastoral leadership in place.  Decisions were made, steps were taken, meetings were held, the worship of God continued faithfully, struggles were surmounted, grace was offered and received, and dreams were not dismissed but doggedly pursued.

Mid-year, I found myself delightfully entangled in some of the decisions that were being made and the steps that were being taken!  Being in discernment concerning my ministry, I was “in the system,” receiving information about churches seeking pastoral leadership.  After learning that we were “matched,” I checked you out and felt a stirring of the Spirit as I reviewed your information and viewed your web site.  I prayed for understanding and then emailed a request to be prayerfully considered.  Initially, there was no response, but then a telephone call started the conversation which continues today.  By September I stood among you in the not-yet-navigated waters of bringing on board a Temporary Supply Pastor.

I am honored to serve our good and gracious God with and among you!  I rejoice in the gifts which abound in this congregation and its staff!  I praise God for the commitment I witness almost daily: commitment to ministry, to one another, to excellence, to growth, and to moving into a future with expansive plans and bold initiatives… and healed memories.

As we navigate these waters together, it is my hope and prayer that we will do so responsively to God’s calling, faithfully to the Spirit’s leading, and noticeably weirdly to Jesus’ credit!  I believe Paul was onto something when he wrote to the believers in Rome: “Don’t be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you can figure out what God’s will is—what is good and pleasing and mature.”

Women’s Circle and Women’s Association 2011

At our meetings we have devotions, a program and great desserts.  We meet from April through December.  We would love to have more of our congregation attend our meetings.

The Presbyterian Church of Kane has a small but active group in our Women’s Circle.  Lois Lundeen continues to be our coordinator for our fundraiser of selling cleaning clothes.  We have an annual food sale just prior to Christmas.  This year we realized $334.50.

For those of you who are not aware if there is a 5th Sunday in the month the loose collection goes to the Women’s Circle.

We were hostess to a few funeral receptions and helped out with meals for the Kane Ministerium.             With our funds we gave $359.50 to the Roof Fund.

The Women’s Association made mission pledges to Presbyterian Women in the Presbytery of Lake Erie, the Synod of the Trinity and to the World.  We have had another successful year with our Thank Offering.  One of our favorite meetings is bring our change that we have collected throughout the year and pouring it out on one of the tables in Fellowship Hall.  Fellowship and laughter abound with the rolling of our coins.  This year our Thank Offering was $159.30.  The Women’s Association also donated $25.00 to the Roof Fund.

All the women of the church belong to Church Women United in Kane.

All women in the Presbyterian Church are members of Presbyterian Women even if they do not attend a Women’s Circle.  They can take part in any of the Spring and Fall Gatherings and the National Gathering every three years without attending any meetings in their local church.

Looking forward to 2012—the Spring Gathering will be held at Oil City.  The Coordinating Team for Lake Erie Presbytery hopes to see you there.

The 2012 National Gathering of Presbyterian Women will be held July 18-22 at Gaylord Palms in Orlando, Florida.

Mission Cell ~ “Above and Beyond”

The Mission Cell was brought into existence by a group who had a vision of the Presbyterian Church becoming more involved in mission work “above and beyond” the money allocated in the church budget each year for mission.

Through the efforts of the Mission Cell many Kane area children have enjoyed new warm winter clothing.  Money has been given for several young people from our congregation who have gone to help states in disaster areas, The cell has helped families who have lost homes and possessions due to a fire and helped with travel expenses for a cancer patient.  Several years aid in funding was given to children attending church camp.  The last request for a motel bill for a transient who had asked the pastor for help.

No requests were made in 2011.  The present bank balance is $104.93.  If a need arises, the congregation will be asked to help use.  All donations are gratefully accepted.

Respectfully submitted,

Lois Lundeen, Mission Cell Treasurer

Lay Pastor and Parish Steward

Again, I would like to thank our congregation for their support over 2011.  Along with my work here at Kane I also lead worship in Port Allegany.

I also attended two CLP continuing education events that were provided by the Presbytery.

                                                                                    Respectfully submitted,

 Christian Education Committee Report 2010

Members of the Christian Education Committee during 2010 included Becky Harris (chairperson), Glenda Buonanducci, Ginny Coppersmith, Kim Ferragine, Toni Ishman, Jackie Watts and Sandy Zook. During 2010, the Christian Education Committee was responsible for the planning and implementing of church school classes, KWT, vacation church school, the nursery during worship, and providing an interface with the Kane Community Preschool. In addition, special events and activities organized by the Christian Education Committee included crafts and activities for children at various times, a Lenten dinner, the “Gathering of the Greens”, the Advent Event, and the Christmas Pageant. With a potential of 87 church school participants, average attendance has been 51 per week. Teachers for the 2010-2011 year are Kim Ferragine, Sue Wilson, Ann James, Becky Harris, Margaret Harris, Larry Walker, Bill Thompson, Joann Wolfe, Glenda Buonanducci, and Dennis Harris. Lynda Karger has served as church school record keeper. This year, all children and youth meet in Fellowship Hall from 9:45 to approximately 10:00 for an opening time, consisting of a brief lesson and singing before going to their classrooms. KWT Plus! has been very active this year, averaging 12 in attendance on Wednesdays after school, with grades 3 through high school. Each week, Glenda and Cris Mallery prepare a lesson and crafts for the children. Volunteers from the congregation donate food for the evening, and meals are prepared by the youth. Cooks this year have been Jack Wolfe, Corey McGuire, and their friend Ryan Peterson, with help from Morgan, Diana and Madison Selan, Bree Johnson, and Kassie and Isaac Walters. During Advent, part of the KWT time was used for music practice for the Christmas pageant. KWT has also undertaken various projects, including collecting and delivering food for the Food Pantry, and making up kits for newborns. The kits have been donated to Children and Youth Services of McKean County. For various reasons, Vacation Church School in 2010, themed “Clean Water for All God’s Children”, was shortened to a one day event on a Sunday afternoon. Although the attendance was smaller than normal, it turned out to be a very lively and fun time! In addition, a collection was taken in the “well banks” and $400 was donated to Living Waters for the World, an organization that provides wells to communities in need of clean water. The CE Committee has already begun to plan for 2011 VCS. With the resignation of Mary Jo Buzard as the Nursery Room attendant, members of the congregation, once again began to be in charge of nursery on Sunday mornings. This has been coordinated very ably by Leanna Schleicher. Becky Harris has been serving as a session appointed liaison with the Kane Community Preschool, which was founded by members of the congregation as a mission to the community, and has met in this church for over 20 years. The CE committee provides preschool parents with information about church events and activities. After Jackie Watts completed her term of service on the preschool board, two church members, Carrie Zook and Amanda Brzezinski, filled places on the board. We ended our C E year with a lively Christmas pageant, Love Came Down at Christmas. We extend thanks to all who took part, and who supported this wonderful event. Special thanks to Sara Smith for designing and making the beautiful banners! The Christian Education Committee welcomes anyone who has an interest in the programs of the church to volunteer for this important committee!

Respectfully submitted, Becky Harris

Property Committee December/ Annual Report for 2010 to Session

We as a committee have decided not to use chemicals for water treatment for the boiler! I wish to thank the many volunteers who have helped out maintaining the building and grounds during this past year; many property committee projects both large and small were completed during the year Dunkle Roofing was called concerning the ripple effect on the roof caused by the inadequate securing of the insulating nail boards over the Sanctuary on Chase Street. Dunkle was aware of the problem and had several solutions planned the remedy the situation in the spring and they did Discussion has been held concerning the heating system and the lack of heating in some areas of the Church. Allied Systems has been contacted to see if more heat could be directed to Fellowship Hall for various lunch meetings held in the room. We are investigating the possibility of placing a timer on the blower motors in the Sanctuary. There was need replace the old snow blower, which was not performing adequately (at all). A motion was made seconded and approved to grant the property committee permission to begin the purchase process for a new or used snow blower with a cost of up to $ 1,000. The dry walling and window repair is complete in the Gathering Place. Some concerns were expressed from a few congregation members about completing dry walling before the walls had a chance to dry out. Following that discussion it was decided to finish up the work begun on the outside interior walls and to concentrate on interior walls until further inspection of the dry-out process. The interior window frame upstairs was repaired. To eliminate the “eyesore” ! Guide One Insurance had made their annual audit of the building with the following “gigs” listed by the insurer. 1. Space heaters in the pre-school must be left unplugged when not in use. 2. Must keep the “Fire Doors” closed at all times. 3. Burned out lights in the exit signs. Tom reported that the Property Committee was investigating LED Exit sings to replace the current signs. it was determined that a significant portion of custodian’s cleaning time is spent cleaning up the Pre School area. The Pre School cleaning requirement will be further monitored. Men’s Club work session and breakfast was held on Saturday March 13th. . Men’s Club held a breakfast on May 15th at which time several projects were addressed. A request to allow the summer workers in the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development “Way to Work” program to perform various odd jobs around the church was approved A motion was made seconded and approved to purchase paint for the pipe railing surrounding the parking lot and also paint for the Pre School classroom. Labor for painting the projects will be supplied by the young adult “Way to Work” group sponsored by Northwestern Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development services in Ridgway A motion was made seconded and approved to make a donation of up to $ 25 towards the end of the year party for the young adult “Way to Work” group sponsored by North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development services in Ridgway who did the painting around the Church Men’s club work bee was held Saturday Aug. 28th at 7:00 AM. and many smaller tasks were taken care of . The church’s old snow blower was removed from the shed and disposed of. Matt Gayley reported that he had checked on the cost of a 24” Cub Cadet from Kuhn’s Saw Shop in James City. The cost of the proposed machine was $ 799. Matt was directed to order the Cub Cadet. Work was done on the big window to make it vent better. We will watch this window closely as the building begins to dry out. Service Master (who also does window restoration) advised us to remove the plastic on the inside of the large window upstairs. The plastic doesn’t let the window breathe Men’s Club work bee was held Saturday October 30th, 7am start. Hot Dogs were served for lunch @ noon. The manse was winterized and is now ready for winter. The church’s new snow blower was delivered by Kuhn’s Saw shop and a period of instruction was given on the new machine’s operation We discovered water damage at the manse on the evening of December 16, 2010. A water line in the hot water heating system broke and caused the manse to flood from the second floor down. The water was shut off as soon as we discovered the incident and our insurance company was notified immediately on the morning of Dec 17. A disaster response service company was called to minimize the damage at that same time. ServiceMaster was called by Guide 1 (our insurance carrier) to come and start drying out the building The purpose of Presbyterian Men’s Cost Cutting Corp is to create a time for men to work and fellowship together, and save cost to our church by doing tasks we would normally have to contract out. Men, please come join us if you haven’t done so yet. . We are looking for any volunteers for winter snow removal. We are starting to patch all walls (Thanks Doc Harris). A great job was done in the Gathering Place both the wall and the window! . We are also intending on repairing the window trim and moldings on the Chase Street side of the building. Our next big capital undertaking should be to replace our old heating system. Thanks to Matt for the grass cutting, and pruning of bushes, shrubs, shoveling and snow blowing Thanks to the Zooks for the plowing Thanks to Kal for watching the boiler Thanks to Skip for thermostats and checking on the buildings Thanks to Bob Ishman, and Tom H for their woodworking help Thanks to all the unnamed helpers who have made this past year easier We need painters to volunteer to paint: 1. the Gathering Place, 2. the Chase Street hall, 3. scrape and paint the choir room, 4. scrape and paint arches on Chase Street side of Sanctuary.

Worship Committee Report

In our Book of order it says that; “In Jesus Christ, the Church is a royal priesthood in which worship is the work of everyone. The people of God are called to participate in the common ministry of worship.” In our church and in all other Presbyterian churches, the session is to provide for the worship and shall encourage the people to participate fully and regularly in it. Under the direction and guidance of a pastor, the worship committee of the Presbyterian Church of Kane is charged with the responsibility of providing for and overseeing the proper and orderly worship that takes place in this church. In this time of transition without a pastor, as we all know, that the responsibility has intensified. The committee has been meeting twice a month and sometimes in between to insure that the development of worship services and all related special services are appropriately conducted. It is the hope of the worship committee that the session will soon find an interim pastor or temporary supply person who will be able to feed us until we install our next pastor. This year has been another good year of worship in our church. Although we have calculated that attendance is somewhat lower than last year for obvious reasons, still our worship experience is Spirit filled. Together we are, “the church.” This is what makes it all worthwhile.

Again, I would like to thank our congregation for their support over 2010. Along with my work here at Kane I had the opportunity to lead worship five times at Bradford East End and five times at Port Allegany. I also attended two CLP continuing education events that were provided by the Presbytery.

Women’s Circle and Women’s Association 2010

At our meetings we have devotions, a program and great desserts. We meet from April through December. We would love to have more of our congregation attend our meetings. The Presbyterian Church of Kane has a small but active group in our Women’s Circle. Lois Lundeen continues to be our coordinator for our fund raiser of selling cleaning clothes. We have an annual food sale just prior to Christmas. This year we realized $306. For those of you who are not aware if there is a 5th Sunday in the month the loose collection goes to the Women’s Circle. We were hostess to a few funeral receptions and helped out with meals for the Kane Ministerium. With our funds we gave $356 to the Roof Fund. We also supported our youth going to summer camp. This year our Thank Offering was $201.60. All women in the Presbyterian Church are members of Presbyterian Women even if they do not attend a Women’s Circle. They can take part in any of the Spring and Fall Gatherings and the National Gathering every three years without attending any meetings in their local church. Looking forward to 2011—the Spring Gathering will be held at Irvine. The Coordinating Team for Lake Erie Presbytery hopes to see you there. The 2012 National Gathering of Presbyterian Women will be held July 18-22 at Gaylord Palms in Orlando, Florida. Respectfully submitted, Glenda Buonanducci Moderator

Mission Cell

The Mission Cell apologizes for not having a complete financial report for 2010. Thanks to the many of you who contributed to the group enabling our church to help others “above and beyond” our church budget. We’ve aided one of our children to go to church camp. A mission trip to help build Mississippi flood stricken area was another way we aided. Keep the $ coming, please. Thank you!

Sincerely, Lois Lundeen
