February/ March Presbyterian News I so love the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments! What an amazing compilation of books and letters and poems and sermons! And oh, what a window into the heart of God and a mirror in which we see who we are as God’s children! The Bible offers so much… comfort, correction, direction, even delight! The Scriptures give us cues about how to praise God and even “scripts” for praying to God. This living Word of God informs every aspect of our lives, not just our “religious” life… but the Bible is our primary guide for the worship of God. Because it is, we hear two or three readings from the Scriptures each Sunday. We generally follow the lectionary for the year. In my discernment, as I prepare prayers and select hymns and work with the Worship Committee and coordinate with our music staff and engage in insightful study in order to “break open the Word of God” (which is the way I think about a sermon), I look for threads of connection upon which to weave a meaningful service of worship… connections between the texts, connections to us gathered-up together as Church, connections to us as human beings, and, most importantly, connections to the God who so wants to be known by us. Because I am tethered to this great gift (the Bible), the Worship Committee has embraced some things that may be a little different from the way things have been on Sunday mornings. Our schedule for the Feast of Faith (traditionally called the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper) this year will fall more in line with the liturgical calendar and the lectionary readings than in a “set” pattern (such as the first Sunday of the month). This month we will be engaged in a Service for Healing and Wholeness on Sunday, February 12th because the texts lead us in that direction. As we are about to enter the season of Lent (which begins on Wednesday, February 22nd), we have resources available for adults, youth, and children which encourage daily Bible reading. It is my hope that you will feast on God’s Word even as you fast in other ways during this season which is steeped in the deep love of God! And because we are tethered to another great gift… this wide world teeming with life… the crosses we will distribute on Ash Wednesday express our connectedness to human beings in another country. Handmade in Tanzania, all of the net proceeds from the sale of the palm crosses benefit projects in East Africa such as vocational training schools, safe community water systems, and emergency relief for victims of drought and civil unrest. The crosses have generated more than $1,000,000 and have offered Africans encouragement and hope for a brighter future. As I personally prepare for this rich season, I will withdraw for several days (February 6th-9th) for prayer and reflection and study and rest. I have not enjoyed a vacation since Mother’s Day last year and I need the “down time.” If there is an emergency, please contact the church office and a staff member will reach me. Otherwise, I would appreciate your prayers for me that I may be renewed for further service with greater energy! So, here’s one of my favorites, a fresh slice of Scripture to savor for a while: “The peace of Christ must control your hearts – a peace into which you were called in one body. And be a thankful people. The word of Christ must live in you richly. Teach and warn each other with all wisdom by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” (Colossians 3:15-16). Blessings & joy, -rebecca
Bible Study on the Letter to the Hebrews During the season of Lent, I will offer a study of this odd but theologically rich book of the New Testament. I would like to schedule two different meeting times to include as many people as would like to attend… a daytime offering and either an evening or weekend time. I’m going to suggest beginning this six-week study on Thursday, February 23rd at 1:00 PM, continuing until March 29th, and on the same Thursdays at 6:30 PM (unless someone would like to suggest a weekend time that would be more appealing). We’ll meet in the Gathering Place both times. If you are interested in participating, please send me an email to revreb10@verizon.net or call me so I will know how many to be prepared for. Blessings! –rebecca The deacons held a reorganization meeting on Monday, January 9, 2012. At that meeting some new officers were appointed while other "veterans" were retained in their current positions. They include: Moderator- Tami Ross, Secretary- Julie Cleland, Devotions- Kim Ferragine, Sender of Cards- Janell Edinger, Meal Liaison Lady- Linda Knapp, Newsletter Contact Guy- Bob James. 2012 Thanks to all who have paid their Per Capita for 2012. If you haven’t please consider doing it soon. If you have lost your small blue envelope there are extras in the Narthex. | There are copies of the Annual Meeting reports available in the office for anyone who missed the meeting last Sunday. Just stop in and take one from the box under the officers’ mailboxes. | ADDRESSES | Please remember to keep the Church office informed of any changes in your postal address, EMAIL or telephone number. If you do not currently receive your newsletter via email and have one, please let us know at presbykane@verizon.net . This saves us postage and gets more information to you in a timely manner.
| Do you shop locally for food…either all or part of your grocery needs? If you do, purchasing TOPS Cards through the church actually can help further our mission efforts. It’s simple…purchase a card (typically $10, $20, $50 or $100 increments) and 5% is automatically earned for mission objectives. You still receive the full monetary value of the card for your shopping needs and TOPS donates the 5% to our church. We distribute the monies earned to various mission projects. | Sound complicated? It’s not! Simple see or call Ginny Coppersmith (837-7439) to place an order for the TOPS card denominations you want. Buy them for your weekly shopping, as a gift for a friend, or even a donation to the FOOD BANK. Orders are usually placed on Monday or Tuesday with delivery in church on the following Sunday. If available earlier, Ginny will even arrange to bring them to you! | Some maybe can’t BELIEVE a program like this exists, but TRUST that it does in our small community. Last year, just a few congregants raised $700 with their purchases. These may seem like small mission contributions, but every bit helps. Just IMAGINE how much more we could do if the program was really utilized to its full potential. Use a TOPS card the next time you shop and help make MISSION a TOP Priority! | Please pick up a Commitment form in the Narthex if you haven’t received one and prayerfully complete it and turn in soon. If you already have one it’s never too late to turn it in. Thanks to the folks who have already done so. Also consider adding Childcare to your list along with any other areas we may have overlooked. | February 26th we will be trying a different way of handling Prayer Requests. There will be a sheet posted on the table in the Narthex for anyone to write a prayer request on. Rev. Taylor will use this for the Prayers of the People. This method will make it easier for Rebecca to get the proper names and the congregation will be better able to hear the information correctly. |

January 2012 Presbyterian News Many of you have heard me say, “I’m new here!” and, while you laugh or tease me about that, it’s true… I have been serving among you for only four months. It feels good to be here… comfortable and, in many ways, already familiar… and I think I am doing pretty well learning my way around not only the community but also the life of the church but from time to time I am asked questions that there is no way I can answer because I haven’t experienced even a full year in this congregation yet. Please be patient with me as I continue to learn new things among new people! “New” is one of my favorite words… not so much because of new “things” (as many of us probably just received for Christmas!) but more so for new experiences, new life, new opportunities, new relationships, new growth… new, new, new! It is one of my favorite words because God says it repeatedly according to Scripture. One of the things that can be said about God with confidence is that God is in the business of making things new… a new heaven and earth, a new covenant, new hearts, new life…new, new, new! Yea, God! Sometimes new scares us. We get comfortable with people we know, we return to places that are familiar, we prefer repeating only experiences in which we feel safe and confident. According to the secular calendar, we are beginning a new year, and we may have some anxiety about what might come our way in “twenty-twelve.” Will we be confronted with something we’ve never faced before? Will we be stretched and challenged by people in ways we’ve not yet experienced? Will we be called upon to go somewhere we’ve not been before or to do something we’ve never undertaken? As we move from the Christmas season into Epiphany during which we are reminded of the ways God has shown up in human history in the past, I encourage you to look for signs of God’s presence here and now bringing about something NEW! As a congregation, we will be installing and ordaining new officers, possibly welcoming new members, getting new ministries with our youth under way, beginning new discipleship studies, and taking on a new LOGOS program with our children… all while continuing to get acquainted with your new temporary supply pastor! As you are open to God’s leading in “twenty-twelve,” if you have a vision, a dream, an inspiration, or an idea for something new, please share it with a church officer, a staff member, a committee, or with me! Expect it… look for it… embrace it… don’t fear it but give thanks for it… new, new, new! When God is around, there will be NEW! Yea, God! “Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law and the Prophets: Jesus, Joseph’s son, from Nazareth.’ Nathanael responded, ‘Can anything from Nazareth be good?’ Philip said, ’Come and see.’” (John 1:45-46 CEB) Blessings & joy, -rebecca The sympathy of the congregation is extended to the families of Lloyd McAllen (Dee) and Larry Wilson (Glen, Sue, Kara, Krysta and Nathan) | Congratulations to Ted and Crystal Slater at the birth of their son, Malachi Aubrey Slater on December 1st. Proud grandparents are Rod and Lori Fiscus. | Sunday, January 8th ~ Epiphany Sunday ~ We will ordain and install the officers of our church, share in the Sacrament of Holy Communion, distribute our annual Epiphany “Star Words” and host an Inquirers’ Luncheon following worship. Anyone interested in learning more about our church and considering becoming a member is invited to attend the luncheon. Please let the office know how many will be attending and if you need childcare. | From:Christian Education and the Dream Team Put March 9th and March 10th on your calendars! | | As part of the Small Church Missional Initiative and the Dream Team’s work for a Bold New Initiative Grant, our church will be hosting a Logos Encounter to learn about a program to complement and enrich our ministry to youth, including those from “outside the walls of the church”. This will be an opportunity for anyone interested in fulfilling the promises that we make at the baptisms of the youth in our congregation and build bridges to youth in our community. Plan to attend, plan to help facilitate, plan to volunteer,…Plan to say “yes” to this amazing opportunity! | | | Sunday, January 29th following worship will be our church’s annual meeting. Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend. There will be a light lunch provided as well as childcare. | | Attention all officers, including those just finishing their service: The Officers Retreat will be at Olmsted Manor on January 21st. If you haven’t responded to your invitation, please let the office know that you will be attending. | | On Sunday, January 22nd at 3:00 PM the Kane Area Ministerial Association will offer a Service for Christian Unity. Our church is hosting this community-wide worship service. A reception will be held in Fellowship Hall following the service. Please plan to attend and if you are willing to help (greeters, nursery keepers, hosts and hostesses, etc.), please let Rebecca or a member of the Worship Committee know!

December 2011 Presbyterian News When I was a child, the Christmas tree seldom went up before the middle of December. The first thing to be placed under the tree was a nativity set. minus the baby Jesus who wasn't permanently attached to the manger. It was always the first "gift" and was usually the only gift under the tree for at least a week. sometimes two. Because it was on the floor, my sister and I would play with it. which is why the camel has a broken leg (although we blamed that on our brother!). We pretended to be Mary making the best of being holed up in a barn for the night or a shepherd shaken by a night sky ablaze with heaven's glory stumbling in wonder into town. (Actually, I thought one of the shepherds was pretty cute!) The best, of course, was Christmas Eve when we'd bring Jesus out of hiding and place him in the manger with the face and hair of a fifteen-year-old but with arms outstretched as if wanting to be held. I obliged, cradling the little plastic Jesus in my palm and considering what it was for the divinity of God to become humanity so that we could hold and be held by the love that saves us. These memories are deeply woven into the fabric of who I am. and, as you know by now, I am weird for Jesus! I am grateful for the faith of my parents and for the ways they passed on their faith to their children. It is little wonder then that I have so appreciated a book I discovered years ago titled Unplug the Christmas Machine: A Complete Guide to Putting Love & Joy Back Into the Season. About a dozen pages into the book what the authors call "The Christmas Pledge" is printed. I embrace it and invite you to consider it as well as we begin our journey to the manger in this season of Advent. I will place copies of it on the tables in the narthex if you'd like to tape it to your bathroom mirror or squeeze it under a magnet on your refrigerator. It goes like this: Believing in the true spirit of Christmas, I commit myself to. X Remember those people who truly need my gifts X Express my love in more direct ways than gifts X Examine my holiday activities in the light of my deepest values X Be a peacemaker within my circle of family and friends X Rededicate myself to my spiritual growth. I look forward to my first Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany with you. and to my first winter in Kane! And I hope you will accept my invitation to drop in during my Open House simply for the joy of the fellowship we share as children of God cradled in the deep love of a very real Jesus whose arms are outstretched still! November 2011 Presbyterian News My family was still living in Ohio so it must have been in the first or second grade that I learned this little rhyme (which I remember to this day many years later!): “Said the little girl as she asked for more: ‘But what is the turkey thankful for?!’” I’ve always appreciated that little girl’s perspective as she was loading up her plate with Thanksgiving Day seconds… or, I should say, I’ve always appreciated how I’ve interpreted that little rhyme… being thankful for one’s own blessings of abundance yet with an awareness that there are others less fortunate around (including the big bird in the center of the table!). The issue for us as Christians… those who more than wear Jesus’ name – we who also get our bearings from Jesus’ teachings/life example… is whom to help and how to help. Need is everywhere we turn and in so many forms… financial, yes, but also physical, emotional, spiritual. As a congregation, we could easily be bombarded with pleas for assistance day in and day out. There are many worthy causes and agencies in our community, across our denomination and country, and throughout the world which help the needy. Which of them do we support and in what ways? These matters are at the heart of stewardship but not because they have to do with the allocation of finances. If you’ve ever been in a boat of any kind, you know that something… or someone… sets a direction and controls a course. If you’ve ever sat in a church sanctuary, you’ve been in the nave of the building… so named for the part of a large vessel which housed the “manpower” for the boat… the place where the crew armed with oars sat on benches and rowed. Are you getting the picture? We are gathered up together in this voyage called life working together as stewards of the ship… and there’s a whole lot of rowing going on without which those who manage the maps and wrestle the rudder wouldn’t go much of anywhere. And this isn’t about money, friends… this is about ministry. And this isn’t about property, folks… this is about direction. It is certainly a burdensome blessing and a blessed burden to have so many treasures entrusted to us… a building to shelter and inspire us, children and youth to disciple and delight in, musical instruments to keep in tune and musicians who faithfully sing and ring, a gospel of Good News to hear and share and embody, the needy to help, the lonely to love… so many signs of God’s abundant goodness yet so much to “keep afloat” and “steer”! It takes all of us working together to discern the leading of God’s Spirit and to say “yes” to that direction with everything we have at our disposal… our prayers, our presence, our pledges, our participation. Are you on board? As Paul said, “Don’t be anxious about anything; rather bring up all of your requests to God in your prayers and petitions, along with giving thanks.” [Philippians 4:6 (CEB)] Let us be mindful of the need around us and celebrate that we are needed! Each and every one has a place in God’s vessel called Church… and there’s always room for more! Blessings & joy, -rebecca GRACIE JEAN MALLERY was born on October 22nd at 7:39 AM. She weighed 7 LBS 13 oz and was 21 inches long. Proud parents are Ali Mallery and Jake Ehrensberger, Big brother Brayden, along with grandparents Mike and Cris Mallery and the entire church family welcome Gracie. What a wonderful space you have provided in the church building for your pastor’s study! If you haven’t seen it, please stop by! Because I am your pastor at the moment (and delighted to be, I might add!), it is child-friendly so little ones are welcome too! I’m going to do my best to generally keep semi-regular hours in that wonderful space so if you’d like to visit when I’m in it, come by on Mondays and Tuesdays between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, Wednesdays from 8:30 to 10:00 am, or Thursday mornings from 10:00 am to noon. And know that you can’t go by whether my car is at the church or not… I love walking up the hill! Know too that the remainder of my time is spent visiting and studying and enjoying a ministry of meetings and musical practices as well as running, biking, hiking, skiing and kayaking ( in other words, enjoying the wonder of God’s good creation!) If you’d like to set a time to visit, just call! And, most importantly, if you need me – in a crisis or during a surgery or in some other pastoral situation – please call me! My local cell phone number will be published once I have one… right now it is still 336.432.0355. Feel free to call me at home too: 837.7368. Finally, know also that I’m loving being “way weird for Jesus” here in Kane!! |

PRESBYTERIAN NEWLETTER October 2011 Note from the Pastor: Angles. I stood in the kitchen of the wonderful Johnson home which I am now honored to call my “temporary” home and looked at all the angles in that room… just one of the spaces in the house that received some TLC before I arrived. Someone painted all those angles. Others cleaned. Several transformed one bedroom from wallpaper to paint. Someone moved appliances. And yet others patched and sanded and smoothed out the signs of the walls’ weariness from bearing their load. I am deeply grateful to and touched by the labor of the many who worked on the house… and the “new” Pastor’s Study… from many angles! Temporary Supply Pastor… it’s a new angle on doing ministry together. A shorter process, perhaps – fewer steps, anyway – and as such, a little more efficient for getting a minister in place. So I’m here! I’m here for at least a year as a Temporary Supply Pastor. Because of this new angle on ministry, we have at least a year to discern whether we are a good fit for one another. We have an “easy out” if we’re not; we have options if we sense that we are. Angles. There will be many angles in this relationship to consider: preaching and teaching, pastoral care and administration, nurturing children and youth, working with staff and officers, connecting in the community and Presbytery. If a year isn’t enough time for us to figure out whether or not we can faithfully and effectively serve Christ together, whether I am bearing my part of the load and you, yours, or not, we can extend the contract and take more time! As we consider our ministry together from all these angles, may we bear in mind Paul’s inspired guidance for the community of believers in Rome: “Love each other like the members of your family. Be the best at showing honor to each other. Don’t hesitate to be enthusiastic – be on fire in the Spirit as you serve the Lord! Be happy in your hope, stand your ground when you’re in trouble, and devote yourselves to prayer.” (Romans 12:10-12 [CEB]) Good words for us from every angle! Blessings & joy, rebecca Rev. Taylor’s New E-mail address is revreb10@verizon.net Her home phone is 837-7368 To all my wonderful church family and friends, Thank you so much for all the prayers, cards and food. Tops Gift Cards Do you shop locally for food…either all or part of your grocery needs? If you do, purchasing TOPS Gift Cards through the church actually can help further our mission efforts. It’s not! Simple see or call Ginny Coppersmith (837-7439) to place an order for the TOPS card denominations you want or purchase what she currently has on hand. Buy them for your weekly shopping, as a gift for a friend, or even a donation to the FOOD BANK. Orders are usually placed on Monday or Tuesday (depending on the need) with delivery in church on the following Sunday. If available earlier, Ginny will even arrange to bring them to you! Some maybe can’t BELIEVE a program like this exists, but TRUST that it does in our small community. Better yet, the PROOF is what this program has done…raised over $1200 for CROP WALK in two years; paid $500 in traveling expenses for D’Iberville, Mississippi volunteers; sponsored college ministry efforts at Penn State; assisted in Debbie and Mike Airgood's mission trip to Nicaragua; and helped others in need and we still have over $500 to designate for future mission! These may seem like small mission contributions, but every bit helps. Just IMAGINE how much more we could do if the program was really utilized to its full potential. Use a TOPS card the next time you shop and help make MONEY FOR MISSION!
